Deck teardowns, done right

Most decks come apart the wrong way.

It's tempting to grab a Sawzall and rip a deck apart in an afternoon. That's how siding gets punched, ledger boards tear the house wrap, and rusty nails end up in the flower bed for the next decade. We take the opposite approach — every board comes off the way it went on, in the right order, with siding and stucco protected the entire time.

Our deck removal crew works Central Indiana from Carmel to Greenwood, tearing down cedar, pressure-treated, composite, and full Trex decks. We start at the far corner and work back toward the house so nothing gets loaded above the ledger. Railings and balusters come off first, then decking boards, then joists, then the ledger board — and we always inspect the house wrap and flashing before we walk away, so if there's a rot problem behind that ledger you know about it before you build the next one.

Footings are your call. If you're replacing the deck, we cut them flush to grade. If you're going to grass or a patio, we pull them out and backfill. Either way, one flat price covers it — no per-post upcharges after we start.

The process

How your deck removal job actually goes.

  1. 01

    Walk & confirm

We meet you on the deck, confirm the tear-out scope, and mark which footings get pulled versus cut flush. Any attached items (pergola, hot tub, gas line) are noted and quoted.

  2. 02

    Rails & decking

Railings and balusters come off first — they're the fastest and clear sight lines. Then decking boards come up one at a time. Composite and Trex boards get set aside for scrap; PT lumber goes straight to the trailer.

  3. 03

    Joists, beams, ledger

Joists, beams, and posts come down in sections small enough to hand-carry. The ledger board comes off last — that's when we inspect the house wrap, flashing, and siding for rot.

  4. 04

    Footings & finish

Concrete footings get pulled or cut flush per your plan. Holes are backfilled with dirt or gravel. Site is raked, magnetic-swept for screws, and photographed before we leave.

Recent job · Westfield

A 16×24 second-story deck coming off cedar siding.

A Westfield homeowner off Ditch Road had a 20-year-old cedar deck she wanted gone — she'd already lined up a builder for the new one but needed the old deck completely stripped so the builder could inspect the ledger and rebuild fresh. The catch: it was 10 feet off the ground on cedar siding, and one wrong move with a pry bar would cost her a $2,800 siding repair.

We started at the outside corner and worked back over three hours, dropping boards down the stairs instead of over the rail so nothing scraped the siding on the way down. When we got to the ledger, we pulled the lags one at a time and left the house wrap intact — she and her builder saw exactly what condition the flashing was in before he built new. Six concrete footings got pulled, holes backfilled with dirt, and by 3pm the trailer was loaded and the yard was raked.

Total: $1,475 for a 384-square-foot elevated deck with six pulled footings. The builder started framing the new deck two days later.
